Certified Basketball Coach and Founder
Johnnie Mathis has an extensive background in both basketball and working with children. Mr. Mathis has been a teaching assistant in the Rochester City School District for the past 14 years, He specializes in social-emotional learning, teaching students how to be the boss of their thoughts as well as the Assistant Basketball Coach with Monroe Community College since 2019. Mr. Mathis played semi-professional basketball for the United States Marine Corps and is dedicated to his company, Shining Stars Basketball Academy.

Coach Mathis believes that we look to others for examples to follow in life. As these relationships are formed, we build lasting friendships that lead to a bond that unites us as a family unit. Through the sport of basketball, Coach Mathis created Shining Stars Basketball Academy (SSBA) to provide the foreground to overcome adversities in a nurturing environment, using their athletic abilities to develop positive relationships on and off the court. Coach Mathis believes in showing our youth that basketball is more than a sport, it is a tool and outlet for young adults to access their full potential through discipline and to attain greater educational possibilities.Â

As a coach, we aims to provide our students with the opportunities for physical, social, emotional, and mental enhancement that will lead them to become a good and productive citizen.
